Décrite par la chronique juive de Londres comme une ambassadrice de « Spine Tingling Gypsy Music », la jeune chanteuse Israélienne, basée à Londres, Mor Karbasi, chante en ladino, en espagnol, en hébreux et parfois en anglais. La vie lui a fait cadeau d’une magnifique voix dont elle fait des merveilles.
Peu de chansons ont survécu depuis la fin du 15e siècle, quand la population espagnole juive parlant le ladino, a fuit l’inquisition. Seul le meilleur survit après une telle période. Mor fait redécouvrir certaines de ces chansons à un large public. Son écriture a été considérablement influencée par ses origines particulières. Sa mère descendait d’une famille juive marocaine, et son père d’une famille juive turque. En effet, elle a été et est toujours une fervente admiratrice de Flamenco, dont on peut sentir la couleur dans ses chansons. Ses premières expériences musicales ont lieu à Jérusalem avec Pena Flamenca, qui l’a initié au flamenco, tandis que sa mère jouait du piyyutim et chantait des ballades juives andalouses à la maison. Elle continue d’être une constante source d’inspiration pour sa fille.
C’est avec cet héritage, façonné pour un melting-pot inspiré du Moyen-Orient, que Mor rencontre le guitariste anglais Joe Taylor, il y a 3 ans, et qui est devenu aujourd’hui un maillon essentiel de la musique de Mor Karbasi.
Joe est un guitariste très doué déjà reconnu à l’époque, avec son groupe Blackbud, par Andy Macdonald, fondateur et propriétaire du label Independiente, qui a signé des artistes tels que Tinariwen ou encore Gomez & Travis. Le quotidien anglais The Times est également conquis. Le journaliste David Sinclair décrit le groupe de Joe comme superbement inventif et Joe comme un guitariste au toucher magique, avec une connaissance encyclopédique de son instrument, avec un sens remarquable des nuances rythmiques et harmoniques.
Mor s’estime très chanceuse de pouvoir collaborer avec un tel artiste talentueux, pour l’écriture et l’interprétation de ses œuvres. Ils vont en effet, tous les 2, former un duo dynamique, qui, avec d’autres musiciens soigneusement choisis, va écumer et enflammer de nombreuses scènes autour de Londres.
Ses performances sont pleines de verve, et sa voix puissante est mise en avant afin de faire entrer les spectateurs de Mor dans sa vision musicale très distincte.

La sortie de son premier album est prévue pour l’automne 2007, avec des invités prestigieux comme Trilok Gurtu, Kai Eckhardy et Ronu Majumdar, réunis par le producteur Matt Howe, lauréat d’un Grammy Award.

Described by London’s Jewish Chronicle as a purveyor of “Spine tingling Gypsy Music”, young London based Israeli singer Mor Karbasi sings in Ladino, Spanish, Hebrew and on rarer occasions, English. Fortune has brought her a wonderful singing voice and she puts it to most excellent use.
Not many songs still survive from 1492, when the Ladino speaking Jewish population in Spain fled the Inquistion - only the most beautiful are kept over such a period. Mor is bringing some of these songs back to the a wider public. Her writing has been considerably assisted by her interesting lineage. Her Mother has Moroccan Jewish descent and her Father Persian Jewish descent. She has been and indeed is, an avid supporter of Flamenco which provides a strong flavour throughout all her songs. Her early musical performances were with Pena Flamenca in Jerusalem which immersed her in Flamenco while her mother played Moroccan piyyutim (liturgical poems) and sang Andalucian Jewish ballads at their home. She continues to be a constant influence on her young daughter.
This heritage already made for an inspirational Middle Eastern melting pot, when Mor met British guitarist Joe Taylor three years ago who is now an important element in the artistic offering which is Mor Karbasi.
Joe is a gifted guitar player already recognised as such within his band Blackbud by Andy Macdonald founder and owner of Independiente – label to acts such as Tinariwen, Gomez and Travis. The Times, as well, are converts, their David Sinclair referred to Joe’s group as “stunningly inventive” and to Joe Taylor as “a guitarist with a quicksilver touch, an encyclopaedic knowledge of chords ….and an outstanding command of rhythmic and harmonic nuance”
Mor counts herself very lucky to be able to call on such talents in the writing and performing of her “oeuvres” – they are indeed a dynamic duo who, with carefully chosen bandmates, have been lighting up many stages around London.
Her performances are full of verve and her powerful voice is set to persuade audiences that Mor Karbasi can infect us with her very distinctive musical vision.
