Né au Bénin de parents antillais, Julien Jacob a trouvé en Bretagne sa terre d'adoption mais il a gardé, de sa terre natale, l'empreinte des chants et des rythmes africains. Compositeur, chanteur, poête et philosophe, Julien Jacob fait partie des quelques pionniers capables d'inventer un nouveau langage musical. Il est aujourd'hui un artiste entièrement cosmopolite. Ses deux albums "Shanti" (Warner 2000) et “Cotonou” (Wrasse 2005), lui permettront outre de belles tournées françaises de se produire dans le monde entier: les festivals Womad (dirigés par Peter Gabriel) USA, Australie, Singapour, Nouvelle-Zélande, Angleterre, Espagne, Canaries, Sicile, Allemagne mais aussi Le Paléo festival de Nyon, les Francofolies de Montréal, London Jazz festival, Nuits Botaniques, Etnoambient Croatie. Il fait aussi des 1ères parties prestigieuses pour Suzanne Véga, Rokia Traore, Césaria Evora, Mory Kante et joue au Womex 2005, festival international dédié aux musiques du monde. Expérience envoûtante, folk-song à la croisée d'une tradition africaine et orientale et d'une pop moderne, la musique de Julien Jacob épouse parfaitement son chant profond et hypnotique. Sons roots, sobriété des arrangements acoustiques, son nouvel album Barham nous convie à visiter l'intimité de son univers et confirme l'identité artistique trés personnelle de Julien. Sa langue imaginaire nous conte les beautés mais aussi les maux de ce monde notamment à travers le titre "Barham" dédié à ses lointains ancêtres esclaves.
Born in Benin in a West Indies family, Julien Jacob found his adoptive home in Brittany but he kept from his native country the imprint of African chants and rhythms. Composer, singer, writer, poet and spiritualist Julien Jacob is among the few pioneering musicians who have managed to invent a whole new style and musical language. He is now an international artist. His first albums Shanti (Warner 2000) and Cotonou (Wrasse 2005) have brought him on French stages and all over the world: Womad festivals (directed by Pater Gabriel) USA, Australia, Singapour, New-Zealand, England, Spain, Italy, Germany but also the Nyon Paleo festival, the Montreal Francofolies, London Jazz festival, Nuits Botaniques, Etnoambient Croatie. He also performs prestigious openings for Suzanne Vega, Rockia Traore, Cesaria Evora and was invited to the international professional world music festival Womex 2005. Described as Folk-Song, his fascinating music is palpably African but also distinctly unlike any African music ever heard, full of original nuances, twists and the off-beat musings of a very rich imagination, overlaying jazz and groove onto West African rhythms. Root sounds, sober acoustic arrangements, his new album Barham invites us to visit the intimacy of his universe and confirms the very personal artistic identity of Julien. His imaginary language tells us about peace but also about sufferings in this world notably through the track "Barham" dedicated to his distant slave ancestors.
